I got my first combat roll in a kayak April of 1999 and have been hooked ever since. I was certified as a Switftwater Rescue Instructor and for several years instructed with a local club as well as a commercial paddling school. In 2013 at the age of 51 I decided that paddling SUP might help my declining sense of balance and bought my first SUP. A few months later I got certified as an ACA L2 SUP instructor and the following year got certified as a L3 Whitewater SUP instructor.
When the Potomac river is between 3.5′ and 4.5′ you can find me in the Mather Gorge surfing my favorite waves. At other levels I enjoy some lesser waves or just running downriver wherever I can find water, gradient and features. Late summer you can often find me teaching basic SUP skills with Surf Reston in one of the Reston lakes. And as to my balance. It is as good as it was in my 20s.

Surf Reston sessions are on the calm and flat water around Reston, Virginia. It’s the perfect environment to learn how to stand up paddle board and build your skills for more challenging waterways. They have weekly sessions held primarily on Thursday evenings and Weekends at Lake Anne and every other Wednesday at Lake Audubon, once a month at Lake Newport and Lake Thoreau.
