GABRIELLE ROVEGNO

MARYLAND / NEW YORK

I grew up surfing in Long Beach …NY, unfortunately not CA…. and spent just about all the time I could at the beach. The beaches where I had always surfed were experiencing severe beach erosion and tons of sand was trucked in to protect the shoreline. With the waves being hit-or-miss, I invested in my first SUP, to make the most of every trip to the beach, waves or no waves. After starting college at UMD, I felt landlocked! I eventually brought my paddleboard down and started paddling around Georgetown, although something was still missing. I started hearing murmurs about about a whitewater paddling community. I found Greg at Paddlestroke SUP, and the rest was history. It was finally the rush and excitement I felt surfing all those years as a kid.

I always thought I would have to settle down on a coast, but now with river surfing, I’ll trade in the sand and salt for rapids any day!

INTERESTING FACTS

I studied Soil Science in college and have been involved with many Urban Agriculture projects in the DC/Baltimore area. I enjoy pickling and preserving different foods from the garden. I try and travel in the winter, during the farming off season, to check out the farms and surf/SCUBA spots in the southern hemisphere!

THE FUTURE

Currently in the process of moving my farm from VA to MD, and hope to do paddleboard and environmental education tours of Jug Bay Wetlands.

FAVORITE PADDLING LOCATIONS

WHITEWATER – MATHER GORGE – MD

This is where I was first introduced to whitewater by fellow Rider Greg Miller. No matter, what the level, or what time of year, there is always a great time to be had.

SURF – SEA CLIFF BEACH – LONG ISLAND New York

Paddling here always has an air of Gatsby to it. Among all the sail boats, below the cliffs with Victorian homes over looking the shores, it takes you back to a slower time.

FLATWATER – lake Atitlan – Guatemala

Guatemala holds a very close spot in my heart. As a farmer I’ve worked with many others from across Central America, all who have graciously shared their home and culture with me. Lake Atitlan is surrounded by a ring of volcanos, humbling you no matter which way you set out!
